Romance is a MUST have for about 97% of the books I pick up. I prefer hate-to-love stories and I like a good story with a nice undertone of romance that is a slow burn, I love stories that make me cry, ache, gripe my book out of excitement for the characters. So here are 10 of my all-time favorite romance stories that I’ve read so many times I have bought several copies because I keep giving them away because they are all must read. Some I just love because I’ve loved them since I was a young teen falling love with reading for the first time so it holds sentimental value, you know?
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
This book was one of the very first books I fell in love with. It’s the most cheery, cute retelling of Cinderella ever! I have read this a thousand times! It’s such a good pick-me-up when I need it! Yes, the movie was crap so if you’ve seen the movie and haven’t read the book well, forget the movie and pick up the book!
Distant Dreams and A Hope Beyond by Judith Pella and Tracie Peterson
There are actually 3 books in this trilogy but I’ve only read the first two because I really don’t care what happens in the 3rd which is mostly about dealing with the sister of the main character. Meh, I got what I wanted from the first two and they are books I’ve read several, several times when I want to remember one of the first hate-to-love stories.
Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier
When I need that slow burn I pick up this book. It is the BEST grim story retelling I’ve ever read. It’s lengthy and amazing. It’s un-put-downable when you get past the first few chapters. So much detail went into this story and the romance is completely swoon worthy on all levels. THE BEST!
Fire by Night by Lynn Austin
This book just made my heart ache. It’s a coming of age story during a time of war, where a country is divided and it shows the pains and agony of war. BUT it’s also a story of two remarkable women. And the romance that develops for both of them. I do have a favorite story between the two but both are awesome. *sigh* doctors are sexy. hee hee
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
I mean come on! The original hate-to-love story, the original brooding male character. The hate, pride, prejudice between the classes, the tension the love, the romance *sigh* ALL OF IT!
Wings of Dawn by Sigmund Brower
This was like my first big adventure book I read when I was a young girl. This was freaking awesome and I’ve read it more than like 5 times my book is actually called Magnus which is what it was originally published. This book is full of adventure and the romance perfect and you don’t know who to trust who is the good guy and who is the bad. Oh man, now I’m in the mood to reread this!
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
This is my favorite classic. It’s just a beautiful story. The heroine isn’t a beauty, yet she is beautiful. A girl who overcomes so much as a child just to be tried and tested as the main character tries to stick to her morals. A girl so desperate to be loved and seeks kindness. A strong female character just a different type of strong something I think a lot of our idea of strong female idea of today lacks. It’s just a beautiful story.
The Winner’s Curse Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski
If there is one thing that this author EXCELLS at, it’s writing emotion. This trilogy is written in such a manner that had my heart aching and me crying in the third book by chapter 11. Achingly beautiful. I just love the story but most of all I love how the author makes me FEEL when reading this trilogy.
Nevermore by Kelly Creagh
I have read the whole trilogy and loved it but the first book is most of all my favorite and I have read the first book multiple times. You have two polar opposites who find love with each other. Add darkness and total Edgar Allen Poe creepy-ness in the mix and you have this AMAZING story. I adore this story, the whole of it but the first book will always be my favorite.
