This one is a great topic because there are certain things that are automatics for me. And even though it’s not a long list because I’m so hard to please, here is my list!
Hate-to-Love stories: If there is one thing, in the whole wide world of books that will make me automatically pick up a book no matter what genre it is, it’s these types of books. Books where two characters have a Darcy-and-Elizabeth-Complex. A Pride and Prejudice problem. Where they hate each other and then through out the story they SLOWLY change towards each other and eventually fall in love. Because usually it’s an undertone, something that makes me what to know what happens with these two and how it’s a SLOW process. Yes I like the slow burn.
Retellings: Seriously, This is a hard one, because even though I have some favorites I still love seeing them redone. From classics to fairytales if it’s one of my favorite whatever and it’s redone? heck yes you better believe I’m hoping on that book real quick!
Mythology: oh the gods of the underworld, I have been in love with mythology of ANY kind (mostly Greek when I was younger) since I could read! So any book based off of any sort of mythology, ESPECIALLY Greek, I am all in!
Fantasy/Paranormal: Take me away to another place, take me on an adventure! I so much prefer fantasy/paranormal to anything contemporary. YES! Way better than any TV show!
Strong, Snarky Characters: I love a good strong character. But if that character is snarky, sarcastic, sassy or what-not, I’m IMMEDIATELY drawn to it! YES! Give me something to laugh at!
Good Ratings: As a book blogger I see how important it is to review books. I LOVE Goodreads because if I hear about a book and I’m interested in it I look at the overall rating and then read the BAD reviews! I want to know why a book that is being rated highly by so many people got low ratings for some. Those “bad” reviews are a huge factor in picking up the book!
Length: Yes I actually go to Goodreads and look at the book and how many pages are in it. Why? because I don’t think I want to read a 200 page book. I want depth, world building, an actual story line. You know…length! Even if the book may contain any of the things already listed, it won’t be good if it’s not well written!
What about you? What are your immediate go-tos?
