Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the awesome people of The Broke and the Bookish
Well this couldn’t have come at a perfect time, a freebie to tell you something unique and different than the others. My sister contacted me for a mutual writing friend that I would do a post about books that sit apart from the rest, that have stuck out to me. Sometimes as a blogger you read so many books that they can mesh together so sometimes it takes a little extra magic for a book to stand out from the rest. So here are 10 books that have stuck out to me for one reason or another and why…
The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski
If there is ONE thing about this trilogy that completely sticks with me above all others, is that the author knows how to write emotion. This author knows how to pull and tug and strum and play with your emotions and heart strings. You literally are on an rollercoaster because you connect with the characters in book one and then you struggle and triumph with them throughout the rest. My heart ACHED all of book two and I literally cried by chapter 11 in book three. Just writing this makes me want to reread this trilogy right now.
The Malediction Trilogy by Danielle L. Jensen
I fell in love with this trilogy and wish it had more hype. I absolutely love this story. It was unique and filled with everything that makes a GOOD story. I think what sets this apart from the rest for me was the first book above all else. I have never encountered a story like this dealing with trolls and I fell in love with the idea, world building and complex characters with complex parts to play. The overall storyline isn’t new per say, just how the author went about it I love and the fantasy aspects. I LOVE the troll world she created and their story.
The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson
Alright, I’m going to be honest I have not finished this trilogy. I have books 1 and 2 and I should finish it, I just keep getting side tracked. However that in no way shape or form takes away from what made this book stand out to me. So while I was reading this book it was just….okay for me but it somehow kept me interested. When I got to a certain point in the book I was FLOORED by what the author had done to me. Her writing was so good that I had to back track and make sure I was not wrong in what I thought the author had done. I couldn’t believe it! After that the story got so much better and let me at a point that made me want to read book two (it hadn’t come out at the time) and now that I write this, I think I will pick it back up!
The False Prince Trilogy by Jennifer A. Nielsen
I came across this first book as an audio book when I needed something to listen to while I edit photos. Well I was hooked and found my self just stopping while I listen to the story. It was enthralling and the main character Sage one of the best. I love a book that can make me show how I’m feeling on the outside like a smile, laugh, cry, grab my chest…whatever. Well with this book I couldn’t help smiling with the main character. He has to be one of my all time favorite characters. He is brilliantly well written and the story was so incredibly well done. What makes this book stand out from the rest is the main character Sage.
Nevermore Trilogy by Kelly Creagh
This trilogy has always stuck out to me because the author brought Edgar Allen Poe to life and it’s probably not in the way you think. After book one (which is still my favorite of the trilogy) it plunges into the creepy dark mind of Poe and his tales. It’s just all so brilliantly well done, I couldn’t put it down and it stuck with me forever! I’m so glad this trilogy is finally finished because it took longer than usual and it was all worth the bloody wait. This trilogy is full of darkness and imagination, I loved it…..obviously.
Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier
This has been one of my favorites for over 10 years. It’s a retelling of a Brother’s Grimm story. It’s a beautiful tale and the writing is magnificent. This is a book I’ve read over and over because it’s just such a beautiful story. Everything about it is breathtaking, from the storyline, to the swoon worthy male hero and our heroine who is amazing in every way. It’s a different type of strength that can be even more powerful than the other type of strong female character we usually have today in our books. This opened my eyes to the wonderful world of Juliet Marillier and this will always be one that sticks out to me.
The Cainsville Series by Kelley Armstrong
I fell in love with this series when a publisher asked if I would be interested in reviewing book two before it came out. Well I had to read book one and these were books I lost sleep over because I couldn’t put them down. They are adult contemporary/paranormal/fantasy fiction which is outside the usual books I read and review? Which says a lot about this series. I’m heavily invested in this story and the characters. This story is very complex with complex characters that add so much depth to the story. The all around idea of the plot and how Armstrong goes about it keeps me riveted and I can’t put them down!
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
What makes this book stick out to me the most was the fact that the author (I felt) did an amazing job of showing both sides of the ultimate question. I found myself arguing with myself with the purpose of this story and I felt the author did a fantastic job with arguing both sides. In the end I’m tied and find myself still at a standstill. With religion I think one way, without it I think another and I found that fascinating and enjoyed a piece of literature that had me think and debate with myself on the overall subject in question when it came to this story. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I picked up the book, and I’m glad of it.
Caraval by Stephanie Garber
I know it may seem a bit unfair for me to add a book that has yet to come out but I think there is a lot to this book that stuck out to me. I was so unprepared for this book and was blown away at everything inside. I have a heroine who fails and fails and fails but gets back up and the things I never saw coming and the twists and turns floored me like no other book has. The imagination and overall plot and ending had me exhausted after I read it. This is a book you can read in one sitting because it keeps a hold on you like no other! MAN it was worth loosing sleep over. This is a book I would definitely reread.
The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
This series was so brilliantly well done. I was so impressed at this author and her writing. Each book is it’s own story, or retelling of a fairytale, but with each book and new brought in characters it added to the overall plot. I loved it. I loved being introduced to the new characters and their story revamped. I loved that the overall plot just continued and just grew and grew with each book and new add storyline that were all like gathering ballon strings and then tying them all together in the end. How each book and character had a purpose and place in the story. Brilliant, just brilliant.
