Why I Picked This Up: It sounded so good! And I’m in the Halloween mood!
MACKENZIE AND AMY WERE BEST FRIENDS.
UNTIL AMY WAS BRUTALLY MURDERED.
Since then, Mac’s life has been turned upside down. She is being haunted by Amy in her dreams, and an extremist group called the Trackers has come to Mac’s hometown of Hemlock to hunt down Amy’s killer:
A white werewolf.
Lupine syndrome – also known as the werewolf vius – is on the rise across the country. Many of the infected try to hide their symptoms, but bloodlust is not easy to control.
Wanting desperately to put an end to her nightmares, Mac decides to investigate Amy’s murder herself. She discovers secrets lurking in the shadows of Hemlock, secrets about Amy’s boyfriend, Jason, her good pal Kyle, and especially her late best friend. Mac is thrown into a maelstrom of violence and betrayal that puts her life at risk.
Kathleen Peacock’s thrilling novel is the first in the Hemlock trilogy, a spellbinding urban fantasy series filles with provocative questions about prejudice, trust, lies, and love.
Ok I had a hard time decided on my ratings for this book on Goodreads I put down 3 stars and said it’s more like 3.5. It was fantastic at first… I don’t know what happened. There isn’t anything really WRONG with the book but I dunno that’s why I can’t really decide on a set rating for this one. I think it was just me. The first day I couldn’t put it down the next day when I picked it up it was like…it lost it’s spark. I dunno. I DO want to read the second book and see how this turns out. So it’s obvious it wasn’t a bad book and good enough that I finished it.
In this story werewolves are known to exist worldwide something you don’t read about every day which made it interesting. Plus there are people called Trackers which track down people with the “werewolf virus” and they take them out of society to “cure” them. Along with the Tracker which I found interesting with the story was the fact that the author added werewolf haters and sympathizers which was great to read but made me wonder if the author was playing an undertone of another topic. I don’t know maybe it’s all in my head but it did make me wonder.
This story is about 3 friends which use to have 1 extra person (Amy who was murdered by a werewolf) Amy’s death left the other 3 Mac, Kyle and Jason, her ex-boyfriend devastated. Jason drank himself sick all the time because of several issues involving Amy’s death and his desire for revenge on the werewolves. Kyle is the strong support with issues of his own that you find out later and don’t see coming. Mackenzie is caught between both of them and feels alone many times due to Kyle and Jason’s own problems.
The mystery starts when Jason whos feels guilty of her death joins the Trackers. Mac doesn’t like the group and she wants to help Jason and get him out of this group. She then decids to dig around her best friend’s Amy’s death. As she and Kyle do their research it turns out that her death was not what it seems.
Mackenzie as a character wasn’t amazing but wasn’t horrible to read. I just couldn’t connect with her. What kept my going was the mystery and love interests going on between the 3 friends. In regards to the romance of the book without saying too much want to say too much but there is sort of a love triangle going but not really. It’s…complicated… 🙂
Overall it was entertaining and I look forward to reading the next book.
Violence: moderate (due to descriptions of bodies being ripped apart by wolves)
