Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile case. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.
Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run or surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.
Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.
So I’ve come to realize I LOVE Ilona Andrews when it comes to urban fantasy! I can’t recall how I was introduced to urban fantasy but he/she was the first author I read from and when it comes to urban fantasy and their minds are insane! The reason why I say he/she is because Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team! How cool is that! Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Which seriously adds to the stories they create. The fantasy aspect and world building and the history behind the stuff is crazy well written.
So I picked this book up because I was in need of an audio book from my drive down from VA to FL about a 10 hour drive. Since I have children we drive through the night. My husband takes the first shift which gives me time to sleep then I take over. I plug in my audio book and get hooked. Since I really liked Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series (I read the first 4 books) I figured I’d give this a try and it did not disappoint! I was hooked and able to drive those last 4-5 hours.
In this book we meet Nevada who’s only “magic ability” is basically she is a human lie detector. Because of this ability she’s crazy good at her job which is that she is a private detective. When she is pulled in by her “boss” to bring in someone who is suspected of killing a police officer and injuring his wife and child, Nevada refuses. Due to pretty much forcing her to take the job she does in order to protect her family and her livelihood.
Enter Connor “Mad” Rogan. Mad Rogan is in search of an accomplice to the crime, a nephew or cousin of his. He does some stupid things in order to try and find this accomplice and ends up joining forces with Nevada.
Together they work on finding this bad guy who has a special talent for fire. And is able to do crazy things with his ability. He was an interesting character and I enjoyed his narcissism and wanted to punch his family because I completely blame them for this guy turning out the way he did. moving on….
I absolutely love their writing style and story telling. Seriously. I love the sarcastic, witty, strong female protagonist. I enjoying the complex, extensive world building and back stories/ histories with this book among their other books.
Overall I really did enjoyed the story however this is an ADULT book with very much adult content.
Sexual Content: Heavy (a lot of innuendos etc. no actual sex-surprising especially when you look at the cover)
